From 5 February to 26 February you can enjoy the special annual miniatures exhibition of Gallery De KunstSalon in Utrecht. Originally miniatures were small images that were used to illuminate medieval manuscripts or very small portraits to carry with you. Today we call paintings and sculptures of a small sizes miniatures.

De KunstSalon shows a wide selection of several sizes and types. Paintings, prints, bronze sculptures and photography together form a beautiful exhibition. It is surprising how the style of the artists remain very recognizable even when working at such small sizes.

From October 30, in Karmelklooster Drachten 22 paintings of Karin Hoogesteger were exhibited in the cloister corridors during the Theme Exhibition 2011 ‘Arctica / Antarctica’. The exhibition could be visited until December 26 2011, on friday’s, saturday’s and sunday’s, 1 – 5 PM. Besides Karin Hoogesteger’s paintings, an international hat exhibition took place.

SWEET AND A LITTLE fragile. Girls with enchanting eyes are portrayed by Karin Hoogesteger. She finds inspiration in collages, story books and family photos. “I depict girls – she says – as an adult because I think it is fair to take responsibility for the way they mature.” Karin (Dutch) is a star of Modern European art. Her works are at Gallery Rademakers Amsterdam until 29 / 4 (galerierademakers.nl).

The paintings at the exhibition SUM, are result of a search of the artist for the State of Being. Shown are different approaches of – I AM – . The Self, the Soul, is not a ‘has been’ or ‘want-a-be’. We imagine ourselves to be something we are not, but we are always who we really are, and not who we have imagined ourselves to be. The thinking mind is not the Self.
Some of the paintings, like ‘God’s Bride’ show the the belief of most people that they are something, which they are not or the desire to be something they are not… (which is one of the main causes of suffering in our lives). Some of the paintings are about the ‘state of being’ itself.
In ‘SUM’, portraits of Islamic girls are shown, but the positioning of the veils and patterns refer to Christian portraits of the Madonna. The paintings exceed the subjective character of a portrait and become more universal.
In the serie ‘Bach’ each painting shows a Bach flower and the emotional state of being that goes with it.
